Dr. William Nathan Upshaw is the Medical Director of Neurospa TMS®. Ever since his first encounter with a TMS chair in 2010, Dr. Upshaw was not only inspired by its remarkable potential but insatiably determined to provide this breakthrough therapy to as many people as possible. Dr. Upshaw has received advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Tampa Bay Institute for Psychodynamic Studies, and has received official certification in TMS and ECT therapy from the MUSC Health Institute of Psychiatry. Today, Dr. Upshaw’s holistic experience in the field has transformed him into one of Florida’s leading advocates for widespread accessibility to TMS therapy.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, otherwise known as TMS therapy, is a procedure that aims to treat patients suffering from depression. TMS is not only cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s also incredibly effective. Nearly 81% of our patients have seen substantial improvements in not only their depression symptoms, but also symptoms of anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Almost 53% percent of them have seen their symptoms go into full remission. TMS is a safe, medication-free treatment, and doesn’t produce any systemic side effects.
Why are these numbers so high, far exceeding the national average? Because our medical staff members are experts in TMS therapy, and they administer treatment with unparalleled precision.
TMS stimulates the brain in specific areas through non-invasive magnetic pulses. These magnetic pulses stimulate nerve cells in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, however, the immersive experience is peaceful and calm. TMS aims to restore the neurotransmitter in the prefrontal cortex and transform the chemical imbalance to create a more positive brain activity as a form of depression therapy. Doctors recommend this non-invasive procedure to provide relief of symptoms related to depression and improvement in the neurotransmission within the brain.
By committing to TMS therapy treatments, with consultation from your psychologist or psychiatrist, you can reduce your medication or counseling service needs and lead a better lifestyle through this innovative and groundbreaking treatment, with the goal of complete remission from depression

There are several issues that affect mental health, of course. TMS therapy can successfully treat the symptoms associated with many of them. Here are just a few examples.
Depression is a common, but very serious mental illness that can impact your everyday life. With both emotional and physical symptoms, such as feeling sad or anxious, irritability, and unexplained body aches, depression is debilitating. A depression diagnosis comes when these symptoms are present for more than two weeks, so it is important if you are feeling these symptoms to contact your doctor. Depression affects an estimated 1 in 15 adults every single year, and 1 in 6 people will suffer from depression at some point in their lifetime.
Anxiety is another common mental illness that affects 40 million U.S adults. Anxiety is the mind and body’s reaction to stressful and unfamiliar situations, and symptoms vary based on the different disorders found within the main group of anxiety. Disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and even social anxiety disorder, all have differing symptoms that are present in various situations.
The most common symptoms of anxiety disorder include the following:
Anxiety therapy can range from cognitive behavioral therapy to medication. While treatment for Anxiety is not covered by insurance, studies have shown that TMS Therapy can significantly improve and reduce overall anxiety levels. Treatment can have our Lakeland patients leading a more positive life faster than they may have imagined possible. Be sure to reach out to our staff to see if this treatment is the right fit for you.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a mental health condition that affects those who have faced or experienced a traumatic event. Traumatic events include war, rape, death of a loved one, a serious accident and more. Any of these events can trigger post trauma anxiety and lead to the need for PTSD-related therapy.
Although Insurance is yet to cover TMS Therapy for PTSD alone, clinical studies have shown that TMS therapy as a form of PTSD treatment can provide positive effects for veterans who have served in the military, including those who suffer from this anxiety disorder. Having served our country proudly — it’s NeuroSpa TMS® Lakeland’s turn to help and serve you.
Symptoms of PTSD include intrusive thoughts or memories from the traumatic event, avoidance of reminders related to the trauma, and even aroused and reactive symptoms when stimulated, such as a violent outburst. We want to give back to you and our other Lakeland veterans experiencing PTSD. Whether you are suffering PTSD as a result of active duty or another traumatic event, TMS therapy at NeuroSpa TMS® Lakeland can be the best place for treatment.
